Sapphire's CSR Programme
About 18 months ago Sapphire began consolidating our ad-hoc Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities and implementing a coordinated CSR programme. These are our achievements so far.
We chose our first charity of the year – C-R-Y Cardiac Risk in the Young. We have been fundraising for nearly a year now and have raised over £5,000.
We have held two Quiz nights which have raised over £1,500. It is run in our offices by Tony Martin and Sam Roland-Jones. These have turned our to be fabulous fun as well as great fund-raising events –
We have held two Bake Sales which have raised over £180. We enjoyed eating the wonderful cakes that were brought in.
16 people ran in the Great City Race which raised over £3000.
We have had a book sale and a clothes sale and have had a few other ad-hoc ideas that have raised over £1,000
As part of our staff wellbeing policy –
We have a matched funding policy. If our staff is raising funds for another charity by doing a fund-raising event, we will match the amount raised up to £100 per person.
We have offered Languages at lunch-time. We offer ten one hour lunch time language lessons for £20 which is given to our Charity of the Year We give our staff an extra half hour for lunch if they are giving blood.Sapphire encourages volunteerism with its Volunteer Day Policy that permits staff to take one day off a year to volunteer. We also arrange opportunities within our community including a reading / maths programme with a local school and a once a year apprentice style project with the same school. Please see our Project Overview by clicking here.
We like to try to keep our staff up to date with the options they have to volunteer. Here are some photos of when City Action came in to talk to us about volunteering at local schools. We have a CSR Committee which runs the different events throughout the year.
We also offer a Ride to Work scheme, a Childcare Voucher Scheme and Reduced Gym Membership. Sapphire also sponsor the Globe Theatre.Sapphire Systems recycles all our waste except for food waste, we have a turn off your computer at night policy and have lights that automatically turn off if no one is in the office. Global Action Plan is currently working with us to create a strategy to reduce our carbon emission.
Our CSR Coordinator, Jan Fair reports directly to the Managing Director of Sapphire Systems, Ian Caswell.
Sapphire has been taking part in the Heart of the City Corporate Social Responsibility programme for a year now. Ian Caswell, our CEO was asked to speak at a Heart of the City breakfast meeting this year.

This year we voted for Cardiac Risk in the Young to be our Charity of the Year.
CRY's Vision 2011: to work with cardiologists and family doctors to promote and protect the cardiac health of our young by establishing good practice and screening facilities devoted to significantly reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death throughout the UK.

A Word from Jan – "We would like to give our staff the opportunity to be part of the decision-making process of our CSR programme and are currently canvassing them to discover how they would like our CSR programme to develop. Watch this space to see how it grows. So far, we have had some lovely responses – people in this company are already doing great things! "Heart of the City" has introduced me to individuals who have implemented inspiring, ambitious, thoughtful and award winning projects. Our mentor is Marcus Jameson Pond from Addleshaw Goddard. He has been extremely helpful and is a real inspiration. The CSR programme that we embark on will be something that everyone in the company can be proud of."
