All their business processes were manual and it was difficult to obtain clear and up-to-date information on the company’s financial position. To maximise profibility Fusion Floral started to look into an ERP system.
SAP Business One
In 2007, Fusion Floral was created as a sister company for leading mass market floral supplier and distributor, Ameri- Cal Floral. Fusion Floral supplies cut flowers, potted plants, and horticulture products to support other retail platforms in the United States.
Fusion Floral had no software systems in place before they implemented SAP Business One from Sapphire. All their business processes were manual and it was difficult to obtain clear and up-to-date information on the company’s financial position.
“We were working from the ground up,” said Dawn Allen, Managing Director at Fusion Floral. “We needed to maximise the profit of the business and this was not easy to do in the way we were working. We began looking for an ERP system to help us achieve this and to offer an understanding of our profitability by customer and by product.”
Dawn and the team at Fusion Floral looked at numerous solutions before deciding SAP Business One was most suitable for their needs. It was a system that had been recommended to Dawn by her husband who is also an MD but, in good humour, she told him that she wanted to assess the market before taking his advice. After evaluating many options Dawn finally admitted her husband was right: SAP Business One was the pick of the lot.
“None of the other solutions compared to SAP Business One. Epicor and Sage just didn’t compete on functionality, plus SAP Business One is intuitive to use and my team has been able to learn the system very quickly and easily,” Dawn commented.
Fusion Floral’s next step was to look for a supplier. Sapphire Systems was selected because Dawn felt the team really listened and understood what they were looking for: “The staff at Sapphire didn’t act like they were pushing for a sale; they understand your business before presenting a solution. They are also very knowledgeable and approachable.”
The implementation and design period went quickly and smoothly, taking only seven weeks to roll-out SAP Business One. Dawn said it met their expectations and that Sapphire’s experienced consultant was extremely helpful.
“We really wanted the implementation to go quickly and Sapphire accommodated by coming in during April for the first demo and getting us live by July,” said Dawn. The implementation was made simple due to Fusion Floral having no other system to integrate it with.
The team at Fusion Floral reported that SAP Business One has been performing well since its implementation and improved their processes and labor efficiencies significantly.
Dawn commented on the changes in her business by saying: “We use SAP Business One from cradle to grave; it is a self-contained system that covers everything we need and we have changed our processes to use every aspect of it. We have also doubled our gross margin with this solution. Labor processes have changed through better planning and this had led to higher profitability. We schedule according to what is being built that day.”
“It has increased our profitability and changed our new product development process completely – now we have the information necessary to only develop the products that customers want,” Dawn said.
Dawn felt SAP Business One could have some additional enhancements to make it an even better fit for the manufacturing sector. Sapphire took this on board, and recently formed a partnership to sell the SAP certified solution, SAP Business One Advanced Manufacturing.
This enables more in-depth reports, and covers low volume / high complexity and high volume / low complexity production.
Dawn and the team at Fusion Floral consider Sapphire to be an excellent company to work with for advice, implementation and support.
“Sapphire has been great. The support team are very good and they have all worked hard to help us accomplish everything we set out to do,” said Dawn.
Fusion Floral put a lot of time and effort into the early stages of the project to ensure they had the personnel on their end for a successful implementation. When combined with Sapphire’s preparation for the project, the implementation was able to run smoothly – any hitches were addressed straight away by the right person, regardless of whether they were an employee of Sapphire or Fusion Floral.
Dawn feels this is essential for a smooth implementation: “Don’t start until you know your processes and what your best practices should be. You need the system to mirror exactly what happens and you need to put in the ground work for this.”
