BayWa r.e. is based in California and specializes in innovative, tailor-made solar solutions. With a global network of companies across Europe and America, BayWa r.e. is a strong partner to coordinate all stages of your solar project with efficiency and reliability. The company specializes in project development, power plant engineering and construction, and project finance. 

 
After going live with SAP’s large-scale ECC6 enterprise solution in 2013, the finance team soon found the system was actually too large for their needs. So when the decision was made to restructure the organization, this was deemed a good opportunity to make a change and start the new BayWa r.e. company with a solid accounting system.  

 
BayWa r.e’s Director of Finance, Narek Ekmekjyan, said SAP’s smaller Business One solution appeared to be the best solution for BayWa r.e.   

 
“We were looking for something more flexible and customizable, which could offer better control at the same time. We considered other systems, such as Timberline and Sage, but they couldn’t provide the level of specific support and flexibility needed.  

 
“It then came down to a choice between the Netsuite and SAP Business One offerings, and we preferred Business One because it seemed easier to use in terms of analytics and the user interface. It was also very customizable, and we felt we had more control over this system in terms of license options and flexibility.”  

 
It seems the system hasn’t disappointed since implementation: “It’s performing well and is a wonderful tool for us in terms of the software functionality, usability, control and design; we love it,” said Narek.  

 
The company’s Financial Controller, Andrianta Pramono, added that the major benefit is improved efficiency.  

 
“SAP Business One saves us a lot of time, I would estimate it has improved efficiency significantly. It’s easy to use and the reporting features are great, offering the capability to slice and dice all these reports per project or portfolio, so the visibility is amazing.”

 
Working with Sapphire

Andrianta first identified Sapphire Systems as a top partner after researching Business One partners on SAP’s website.  

“After talking to the Sapphire team we knew straight away we wanted to work with them. The business development and implementation representatives were just great, you could tell they were professional and knew what they were doing,” he said.  

Since that initial contact, the team at BayWa r.e. have been equally impressed with Sapphire’s approach to implementation and support.  

“The level of competence, the response time, the quality of work and the service has been great. Sapphire were very flexible and supportive throughout the implementation, and still are. If we have questions they don’t hesitate to get back to us quickly and it’s a great partnership we’ve created with them; I would definitely recommend them to others too,” said Narek.  

Andrianta added: “In fact we have friends in the same industry using SAP Business One, but with a different partner, and they have had a lot of complaints.  I explained that our experience has been great, so it’s not the software it’s more about who implemented it; therefore we’ve recommended they consider Sapphire as we’re so happy with the level of support we get.”  

Advice to others 

Narek also had some helpful advice to offer other companies considering implementing a new solution.  

“I would say the main things are not to rush the process, and communicate regularly with your implementation partner. Be sure to cover as much detail as possible in advance as you go through the business analysis, processes design and software design scope. 

"This may take more time and money but it’s important to thoroughly understand your needs and analyze your processes before changing software. Sapphire is really good at discussing such planning,” he concluded.
