SAP Business One 9.3 is now available, which is great news for any SMB that wants to perform workarounds in numerous functional areas. There are more new features than we can talk about in this blog, so we’ll cover three significant additions in the areas of production routing, project management, and return material management (briefly covering the features that target easy workarounds).

Production Routing

If you have a lightweight production requirement, this tool is useful. You can easily schedule and manage different stages of manufacturing and add route stages to bills of materials and production orders. You can also assign employees to various cost centers.

Project Management

Business One offers new tools in project management, including a new billing wizard. This new feature is an overview screen that displays projects in their entirety, along with a timesheet report. Cost analysis is more straightforward with the new ability to assign transactions to specific stages within a project versus to only the overall project.

Users also have the option to use Gantt Chart overviews and drill down into areas of interest for deeper details.

Return Material Management

A long-awaited capability, Version 9.3 users can easily generate RMAs directly from a menu, invoice, delivery, or service call screen. You can pre-step return documents, enter agreed quantities and prices, and include the reason for each return – all before you perform the return.

Multiple Areas with Improved Features

Analytical Portal. All Business One users gain access to the analytical portal, which has many new features, including:

  • Publishing and sharing of documents for Crystal Reports and Excel
  • Portal access via Google Chrome
  • Role-based access to authorized reports
  • Device-independent document viewing

Blanket Agreements. Blanket agreements are now more flexible and easier to manage with features like:

  • Application of exchange rates with foreign transaction partners
  • Enabled updating to planned amount, planned, quantity, and price
  • Determined shipment types
  • Option to assign a valid blanket agreement where no default is chosen

Campaign Management. Not only can users differentiate between executed and non-executed campaigns, there’s more granular control over campaign execution and campaign-specific measurements, such as per-campaign roll-ups of revenue and profit.

Improved Cost Accounting. The cost accounting features are plentiful in Version 9.3, including:

  • Maintenance of separate numbering series marked as “Cost Accounting Adjustment Only”
  • “Cost Center Transfer” transactions to allocate costs between cost centers
  • Journal Voucher adapted to cater to Cost Accounting Adjustment transactions
  • Complete audit trails maintained by department

Users can even set up defaults (Default Series and Default GL Account) to automatically populate Cost Accounting Adjustment transactions.

Electronic File Layout Templates. You can now assign a generic electronic file format to a GEP file as a print layout option for any report or form in SAP Business One.

Embedded Incident Management. Customers can record problems within the Business One Client, document steps taken, and report from within the system.

GL Account Determination. In addition to standard fields, you can now manage up to five user-defined fields (UDFs) in the determination criteria screen. You can use these UDFs to define rules in the “Advanced G/L Account Determination Rules” screen and gain more flexibility when determining accounts to be posted based on business criteria.

My Settings. Support for personalized settings delivers content and functionality that matches user needs or interests; it’s easy for users to adjust the interface to their liking. In addition, the General Settings configuration logic is separate from User Settings and reflects only company-wide system settings. The combination of these two improvements means you can centralize settings while giving each user customized views, content, and functionality. And, if company-wide settings change, there’s no disruption to individuals’ user settings.

New Cockpit Templates. There are new Cockpit Templates for finance, sales, purchase, and inventory, and all templates are available via a “Select Template” button. Users can create their own Cockpit Templates and set them as Public, enabling role-specific Cockpit views and Cockpit views for testing.

Price Lists. With a pricing hierarchy per business partner (BP), you gain options to override the existing logic for selecting effective prices and can limit special prices to an active period of time. This grants you more flexibility in BP pricing and helps you avoid incorrect discounting to maximize revenue.
